Salz gave two lectures at the International Congress meeting of the Italian Society of Ophthalmology in Rome, Italy, which took place from May 17-20, 2006. This meeting was also a regional meeting of the International Society of Refractive Surgeons of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Salz has been past chair of this Society and is currently on its executive committee. Dr. Salz gave one lecture on intraocular lens calculations after refractive surgery and a second on the pre and post-operative management of LASIK patients with large nighttime pupils.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to interact with over 2,000 colleagues from Europe at this important meeting,” said Dr. James Salz.

Laser eye surgery involves reshaping the cornea, the outer lens of the eye, with an excimer laser beam, to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Laser vision correction was first approved by the FDA in 1996 and the procedure has undergone multiple refinements since the original approval including flap creation with a laser instead of a blade and customized wavefront based treatments which improve the chances of obtaining 20/20 vision or better and provide better quality vision with fewer side effects such a night glare and halos

LASIK is a popular form of laser eye surgery uses a combination of automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK) using a microkeratome (FDA approved) to create a “flap” and the excimer laser (FDA approved) to reshape the cornea (“zap”). LASIK is the most commonly performed laser eye procedure worldwide.

Read more about " Ophthalmology Meeting in Rome, Italy in May 2006"...

Australian Eye Worries

Eyes are often the subject of songs and poetry and sight is one of our most precious senses. Still, most take theirs for granted. So how do you protect your windows to the soul?

Most people take their sight for granted, yet in the next two decades about one million Australians will go blind or suffer vision loss. They'll then also be more at risk of injuries and, perhaps because of increased isolation, they'll be more likely to suffer depression.

Vision loss cost Australia a total of $9.85 billion in 2004 - more than it costs to treat and manage coronary heart disease, stroke, arthritis or depression. But around 75 per cent of vision loss and blindness ispreventable or treatable. Looking after your eyes now may stop you losing your sight in the future.

"In a study, 80 per cent of people said sight was important for ageing in a healthy way. But when we asked people to rank the most important regular health checks, eyes wereat the bottom of the list," says Jennifer Gersbeck, CEO of Vision 2020 Australia, a national organisation which encourages eye care and works with the government to develop the National Framework for Action to Promote Eye Health and Prevent Avoidable Blindness and Vision Loss.

"People want healthy eyesight but they don't do anything in apreventative sense," says Gersbeck. "They get their blood pressure and cholesterol checked and have aregular mammogram and Pap smear, but they don't think about their eyes."
About 80 per cent of vision loss and blindness in Australia is caused by five key conditions.

Refractive Error • what is it?
Refractive error is the most common cause of vision problems. The image of an object is not focused properly on the retina - the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye - so images are blurred. Common refractive errors are myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness).

"About 1.6 billion people in the world are short-sighted," says Professor Deborah Sweeney, CEO of the Vision Cooperative Research Centre (Vision CRC). "Partly because we spend more time watching TV, using computers and studying."
• signs - Refractive error increases with age. You'll have difficulty doing close work if you're long-sighted and you'll have trouble driving or seeing long distances if you're short-sighted.

• treatment - Over half the people with this problem would have their sight improved by wearing a correct pair of glasses or lenses. Vision CRC is also developing an anti-myopia lens. "We're developing a lens that looks at the way light enters the eye and how it focuses on the back of the retina to keep things in focus," says Professor Sweeney. "We may see something on the market in the next two years."
• prevention - Get your eyes tested every two years. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, have regular eye tests.

Read more about "Australian Eye Worries"...

Post Lasik Eye Drops For Casey Smith

When a baseball hitter gets on a roll, the cliche is that he is "seeing the ball better."

For Salt Lake Bee infielder Casey Smith, it's not just a saying. It's fact. Smith went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored in leading the Bees to a 12-4 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers on Wednesday at Franklin Covey Field. That raised his season batting average to .333.

Last year Smith was a .221 hitter for the Stingers. The big difference? This year he actually is seeing the ball.Smith had Lasik surgery on his eyes two years ago, but excessive scar tissue on his right eye after the procedure made his vision unclear when his eyes dilate. "So when it gets dark, I have trouble seeing," Smith said.

That was a huge problem last season. The vast majority of the games are played at night. But Smith has found a solution. He now puts drops in his eyes about eight hours before game time. "They keep my eyes from dilating, and it makes a world of difference," he said.

Read more about "Post Lasik Eye Drops For Casey Smith"...

Excimer Laser Eye Surgery At Collom & Carney Eye Institute, Texarkana

The eyes are the window to the world and it’s no fun when you need glasses or contacts to get a clear view.

But in Texarkana, patients can take advantage of state-of-the-art excimer laser treatments at Collom & Carney Eye Institute to see the world without having to resort to contacts or glasses.

“Particularly at this time of the year there is a high level of interest in LASIK treatment. As people are heading to the lake, pool or the beach, they struggle if they need glasses or contacts and seriously consider the freedom natural vision without them can bring to their lives,” said Dr. Wanda Northam, an eye surgeon at Collom & Carney.

“We brought LASIK to the Texarkana area over eight years ago, and although the results have been remarkable, I’ve been amazed at the extra dimension to the quality of vision that wavefront Custom Cornea has added.” Dr. Northam said. “The LADARWave measurement device creates a unique 3D map that serves as a guide for the laser treatment.”

Each patient’s customized map is created by transmitting a safe ray of light into the patient’s eye. The light is reflected off the retina and out through the pupil, where it is received and arranged into a unique pattern representing the patient’s distortions. These visual irregularities are displayed as a three-dimensional map, referred to as a wavefront map. This is matched by computer to the eye’s position, enabling Dr. Northam to customize LASIK for each patient’s visual requirements.

“Astronomers have been using wavefront technology for decades to detect and remove atmospheric distortions that blur images seen through powerful telescopes,” she said. With this same technology being applied to vision correction, Dr. Northam can measure and reduce visual abnormalities that couldn’t be detected before.

The custom wavefront lasers are more expensive but offer greater accuracy in producing high quality vision. Cost depends on the procedure, the equipment used and the expertise of the surgeon.

Read more about "Excimer Laser Eye Surgery At Collom & Carney Eye Institute, Texarkana"...

Midwest's Largest Laser Eye Surgery Center

Architectural designs were approved today for the largest and most comprehensive eye center in the entire Midwest. The University of Michigan Board of Regents gave the
go-ahead for a $121 million expansion of the U-M Kellogg Eye Center, approving the plans for a 222,000 square-foot building that will nearly double the University's current space for eye care, education and research when it opens in 2010.

The expanded Eye Center will be a model for other vision centers, allowing the U-M Health System to serve an aging population -- including many Baby Boomers who are just beginning to turn 60, an age at which many start to experience cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and other conditions of the aging eye. Current projections forecast growing demand for technological vision-care advances, ranging from genetic testing for eye disease, to "bladeless" laser surgery, to new kinds of lenses that can be implanted to improve vision after cataract surgery.

The Kellogg Eye Center has experienced 11 percent growth in patient visits in each of the last seven years and expects even faster growth as the aging boomer population peaks in the next 10 to 15 years. By 2030, 25 percent of Michigan's population will be 60 years or older, placing a strain on medical centers that have not planned for growth. The new Eye Center will serve these patients with state-of-the-art clinics, educational facilities, and laboratories where scientists will have the resources to
accelerate research on eye disease and treatments.

Read more about "Midwest's Largest Laser Eye Surgery Center"...

Wins Free LASIK Eye Procedure

Northeastern Pennsylvania: Eye Care Specialists gave away a LASIK procedure through a contest with Froggy 101. Almost none could believe that a sharp laser beam cutting through the thin mussel on the cornea could correct refractive errors of the eye so simply.

"The funniest thing is despite Einstein proving its possibility in 1917, we couldn't develop the technology because no one was prepared to believe in it," says Dr Bhaumik, whose pioneering invention of the laser technology paved way for the LASIC form of eye-correction.

"From the early 1990s though, around 15 million people in the world have undergone LASIC or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis with almost complete functioning of their eyes."

Read more about "Laser Surgery For Vision Correction"...

Intralasik Laser Technology

Bochner Eye Institute, a leading cataract and refractive surgery clinic, will be the first LASIK centre in Canada to install the new 4th generation IntraLase(TM) 60 kHz laser.

With improvements in speed, precision and greater safety, the IntraLase system allows the surgeon to deliver faster visual recovery, better visual results, and fewer re-treatments.

Since adopting IntraLase technology in January 2006, preliminary results with the IntraLase have been extremely promising. "The current solution is the bifocal and trifocal lenses."

The condition of presbyopia occurs with age when the eye muscles start to lose their focusing power, a condition that can be remedied by wearing multifocal lenses. Presbyopia is the most common eye problem and affects everyone in some form by age 51.

But these new glasses could reduce the headache brought on by tilting one's head to gaze through a bifocal lens.

"Some people feel dizzy or uncomfortable with eyeglasses," said Li, also an optical science assistant research professor.

The new eyewear adjusts the focus of the entire aperture, the entire viewing area of the lens, rather than the small sliver of a lens in a bifocal, Li said.

The secret to switching focus lies in the electrically charged liquid crystals sandwiched between two panels of glass. When the proper voltage reaches the crystals, they change the refraction index, mimicking a lens, Li said.

The glasses currently have two settings; on and off, Li said.

When the device is turned off, it allows the wearer to see things at a distance, the way normal glasses would. When they are turned on, the glasses automatically switch to a comfortable reading focus, Li said.

The next step in the project is to develop multiple focus powers, the equivalent of a trifocal, Li said.

Another objective of the project is to do away with the on/off switch altogether and develop a "smart" rangefinder that can automatically zero in on an object, much the same way a camera works, said Nasser Peyghambarian, an optical science professor and project leader.

"What's next is we need to develop an autofocus," Peyghambarian said.

Peyghambarian, himself a bifocals wearer, said the new developments would present people an alternative to laser eye surgery or conventional multifocal glasses.

PixelOptics, Inc., a Virginia-based company, holds the patents for the electroactive glasses and plans to market the devices sometime in the near future, said CEO Ron Blum.

"The UA optical science center has done an outstanding job for us," Blum said. "We're just thrilled to have them as a research partner."

Read entire item "Autofocus Glasses - LASIK Alternative?"...

LASIK Locations USA

LASIK Benefits USA has access to Board Certified, credentialed LASIK surgeons across the country, from LASIK Austin to Tallahassee. Despite the aura of new technology surrounding the procedure, most surgeons actually use a tiny handheld blade to create an opening in the cornea and then use a laser to reform the underlying tissue. Now, an innovative laser technology called IntraLase is giving surgeons a new kind of edge.

The IntraLase LASIK procedure — now performed by local Indianopolis surgeons at Price Vision Group and TLC Laser Eye Centers — opens the door to better eyesight for many patients who previously weren’t candidates for LASIK because of thin corneas. The laser-controlled surgery produces clean, high-precision cuts in the cornea that offer superior reliability and fewer complications.

Read more about "New LASIK Procedure Removes The Knife"...

Nebraskan Eye Centers Offer IntraLASIK

The Omaha Eye & Laser Institute and Lincoln Eye & Laser Institute is proud to be the first Laser Vision Correction Center in Nebraska that offers IntraLASIK™ and CustomVue™.

They are committed to state-of-art refractive eye surgery with the highest standards in quality and safety. In the two days that it stood at the local hospital, ophthalmologists from the local hospital teamed up with doctors from Bangalore to conduct diabetic retinopathy screenings, Flourescein Angiograms and laser eye surgeries inside the van. When patients do not come to the surgery room, the surgery room must go to the patient. That is what Vittala International Institute of Ophthalmology (VIIO) did when it initiated the ‘Nayana’ project earlier this year. The project funded by the World Diabetic Foundation includes the creation of a sustainable fully equipped mobile Diabetic Retinopathy Screening and Treatment Facilities van.

VIIO and many other organisations conduct periodic eye camps in rural areas. The diagnosis comes free. The operations too are often conducted free of charge. But surgery requires patients and their caretakers to travel long distances to a hospital, and take a week off from work. “It is sad that on an average if we see 1,500 patients during a free eye-camp, only 60-70 turn up for a follow-up visit. And only a handful come forward for treatment,” points out Dr K R Murthy, Director of VIIO. “Through the Nayana Project, we hope to reach out to the potential diabetic population of 280,000. In the three-year term of the project 12,000 diabetics will receive treatment from the mobile unit for diabetes and related vision problems of which at least 8450 people will receive the treatment free of cost.”

ndia’s Vision 2020 programme recognises Diabetic Retinopathy as one of the major causes of preventable blindness. According to Dr Anil Kapur, Vice Chairman, World Diabetes Foundation, there are 200 million diabetics in the world, and the number is expected to shoot up to 370-odd million in the next 25 years. India topped the list of diabetic countries, followed by China and USA. (Latest reports put China ahead of India on the list). “Diabetes does not receive enough concern from policy-makers even though the health and economic implications of diabetes are tremendous,” says Dr Kapur. Dr Kapur has initiated the development of several programmes and public awareness campaigns in diabetes as part of the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation and has presented numerous lectures on diabetes, in India and around the globe.

Read more about "Indian Eye Clinic On Wheels"...

OP Eye Doctor Takes Part In Post-Lasik Trial

Millions of Americans who have undergone Lasik surgery face a return to eyeglasses or contacts as their near vision -- like everyone else's -- begins to diminish with age. But Dr. Daniel Durrie is working on an alternative.

Refractec Inc. of Irvine, Calif., has chosen Durrie Vision of Overland Park and four other opthalmic practices across the country to conduct expanded clinical trials for a procedure called Post-Lasik NearVision CK.

CK (conductive keratoplasty) is a radio-wave treatment that already has received Food and Drug Administration approval for treatment of presbyopia, or age-related loss of near vision, and hyperopia, or farsightedness.

Now, Refractec is trying to determine whether the three-minute procedure should be used on people who have had Lasik.

A preliminary study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in October revealed no safety problems and satisfactory outcomes, said Durrie, lead investigator for that study.

"The first 42 Lasik patients participating in the clinical trial had a very enthusiastic response to NearVision CK, with 81 percent reporting being satisfied or very satisfied with their post-operative vision," Durrie said in a written release. "We are continuing to see positive results with patients enrolled in the study, and hope to complete enrollment this winter."

According to Durrie, preliminary study participants were asked to describe what they were able to see without glasses before and after NearVision CK. The majority reported that their ability to see objects such as street signs at a distance remained unchanged. However, Durrie said the procedure made the following differences in tasks involving near vision:

* Following the procedure, 95 percent of patients were able to read a computer screen, compared with 67 percent prior to the NearVision CK treatment
* Twenty-nine percent of patients were able to read menus or golf scorecards without glasses, but more than 86 percent were able to after NearVision CK.

During the expanded trials, about 150 more patients older than 45 who have had Lasik vision correction are expected to receive CK.

Using a probe thinner than a strand of human hair, CK applies radio waves in a circular pattern on the outer cornea to shrink small areas of collagen. This shrinkage creates a constrictive band, increasing the overall curvature of the cornea to bring near vision back for Baby Boomers.

Read more about "OP Eye Doctor Takes Part In Post-Lasik Trial"...

Boothe Eye Care And Laser Center Dallas

With the incredible technological breakthroughs in LASIK vision correction, you have no reason to live restricted by the hassles of glasses or contacts. Maybe I should put in this disclaimer, "Get ready, hang on, oh ye of weak, queasy tummies, we will be discussing the ol' eyeball." Focus, y'all. It'll be OK.

I am right there with you when it comes to matters of the globular ball that sits in the eye socket. It's hard for me to put contact lenses in, much less think about getting something out of someone's eye. So, even contemplating an operation involving the eye is tough.

That's why when Rod, the youth pastor, invited the staff to a viewing of his LASIK eye surgery, I about passed out. Rod said it was harder for us to watch than for him to have experienced the surgery. He gave a blow-by-blow - or make that a zap-by-zap - narration of the whole procedure.

Rod remained awake and feeling like he had entered the twilight zone as he stared at a flashing red light. As he spoke and the film rolled, my hands covered my eyes. Every so often I'd sneak a peek. The beginning moments I could handle. Then came suctioning the eyeball into the thingamabob. I think all the audience, including the brave at heart, started jumping an achy, sympathetic sort of jig. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

The next scene featured small laser cuts to make the flaps, and after some other something I just couldn't muster the courage to watch, came the zap, zap, zap to correct the vision. My humble description may not be an exact replication of the science of eye zapping, but I understand there was no pain. I don't believe even if I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express I'd been up to operating.

Thank God for those surgeons who have the gift of restoring the ol' 20/20, because I do know that a young man who had worn glasses since he was a little boy could toss those babies aside. He who was sight deficient sees clearly now.

Read more on "LASIK Viewing for Rod The Pastor's Surgery"...

New Eye Surgery Helps Those Who Can't Get Lasik

Lasik surgery is all the rage, but it won't work for everyone. Now, a new procedure may help some folks who have been left out. People who are moderately to severely nearsighted are suddenly seeing clearly with this new surgery.

Instead of using a laser, doctors insert a semi-permanent contact lens into the eye. It only takes about 10 minutes.

Without glasses, Anthony Rizzo has been unable to see much more than a blur since the second grade.

"I golf, I fish, I dive, you know, so being active like that with this type of vision is really difficult," Rizzo said.

Rizzo is severely nearsighted and he couldn't qualify for eye procedures like Lasik. But he is eligible for implantable collamer lenses.

"What it does is, it provides a focusing power the same way a contact lens would provide the focusing power, but it's inserted into the eye," said Dr. Lawrence Katzen, an ophthalmologist.

During the procedure, Katzen inserts the plastic lens and rests it behind the iris on the lens of the eye. It is semi-permanent, meaning it can be removed if necessary.

"I think the ideal patient is somebody who is motivated not to wear contacts or glasses, has a high degree of nearsightedness and would like to improve their quality of life," Katzen said.

The results are virtually instant.

After decades of living in a blur, Rizzo can finally see what he's been missing with the naked eye.

"I can see already. I mean, very well. It's going to get better in the next couple of days, but you know, it's amazing," Rizzo said.

The procedure is expensive. It costs about $7,000 and there can be side effects such as halos and glare. "I can read the road signs a hell of a lot better."

Hall exclusively revealed late last year that he couldn't actually see the football when it was at the other end of the ground, and that he had trouble judging the ball's flight.

"It would be on me quicker than what I thought it would so I'd be snatching at the footy all the time," Hall said. "It was definitely worse at night."

Hall, 29, unsuccessfully tried wearing contact lenses after an eye test last April identified a sight problem, so he simply put with not being able to see properly.

Despite his poor vision, the Swans' menacing centre half-forward led the AFL in contested marks, and kicked more goals and set up more scoring opportunities than anyone else.

Read more on "Hall Focuses On New Season After Laser Eye Surgery"...

Eye Surgeons Debate Blade vs. Bladeless LASIK on AllAboutVision.com

A new AllAboutVision.com feature offers people interested in laser vision correction different eye surgeon viewpoints on the merits of blade or bladeless LASIK.

A thin, hinged flap is created on the eye's surface during LASIK, enabling the surgeon to reshape the underlying tissue with an excimer laser to improve vision. The flap is then returned to its original position.

But eye surgeons differ on whether the LASIK flap should be created with a bladed instrument called a microkeratome, or with the newer IntraLase laser method.

Two respected eye surgeons - Vance Thompson, M.D., and Brian Boxer Wachler, M.D. - debate the blade vs. bladeless LASIK approach to vision correction in this new feature:

http://www.allaboutvision.com/visionsurgery/blade-vs-bladeless.htm

AllAboutVision.com's LASIK & Vision Surgery section addresses additional topics such as how LASIK works, what to expect during and after the procedure, risks, cost, and how to choose an eye surgeon. Related procedures such as LASEK, Epi-LASIK, PRK and custom LASIK are described, along with procedures such as implants and conductive keratoplasty.

Read more about " Blade vs. Bladeless LASIK on AllAboutVision.com"...

Laser Eye Surgery Excluded In Dutch Health Care

Private insurance for medical care is coming ever more into play among the international community as politicians seek to control runaway health budgets.

Holland is the latest country to require foreign nationals, whether working in the country or simply resident, to have valid cover. But there are now several different approaches to performing the same operation - that of remodeling the lens of the eye so that sight correction becomes unnecessary. So what does LASIK mean and why is it becoming more popular? LASIK is an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileiusis - a long expression for something that is fairly easy to understand.

This type of eye surgery is now becoming ever more popular and prices are falling all the time. Five years ago, prices were well over $2000 per eye, now it's available for as little as $1700 per eye. Still not cheap, but definitely worth it if you want to be rid of spectacles forever. It's a ten minute operation for each eye with a three day recovery time. But beware of practitioners offering much lower rates - such as $499 per eye - this cost usually masks other costs that will make the total operation much more expensive in the long run.

Read more on "Lasik Laser Eye Surgery Set To Boom"...

Harvard Study Finds Eating Tuna Regularly Protects Women From Eye Problems

A recent study by Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Schepens Eye Research Institute at Harvard Medical School has determined that eating tuna at least five times a week can help women reduce their chances of developing dry-eye syndrome.

Phyllis Knapp, a secretary from Kalamazoo, Mich., knows all too much about an ocular condition called dry-eye syndrome. During breaks at work she'd cover her eyes with a cold compress to get relief. Finally, the distraction became so unrelenting that she left her job.

"There's no relief from it; the only relief you get is when you shut your eyes," she says. It can't be cured with a few eye drops, and it leaves its sufferers with burning eyes, blurred vision and the need to protect their eyes from the elements at all times.

Some, including Knapp, reported that their symptoms first occurred after laser eye surgery.

Read more on "Harvard Study Finds Eating Tuna Regularly Protects Women From Eye Problems"...

Intralase IntraLASIK All Laser LASIK Detailed Information and Comparison

IntraLASIK, also called "all laser LASIK", is exactly like traditional conventional or custom wavefront LASIK, except the corneal flap is created with a femtosecond laser microkeratome rather than a mechanical microkeratome with a metal blade. The IntraLASIK name comes from a combination of the name of a femtosecond laser manufacturer, Intralase, and LASIK.

IntraLASIK may be performed with conventional laser ablation or wavefront-guided custom LASIK laser ablation.

There are several distinct advantages to IntraLASIK that make IntraLASIK more predictable and safer than traditional LASIK with a mechanical microkeratome. These advantages include more precise positioning of the flap, more accurate thickness of the flap, more even thickness of the flap throughout, and a lower probability of intraoperative complications such as buttonhole flaps, thin/thick flaps, or epithelial defect. Recent studies have shown IntraLASIK to be more favorable than LASIK with a mechanical microkeratome in providing vision with better contrast sensitivity.

Some patients, but not all, experience a short period of increased corneal edema with IntraLASIK.

Read more about "Intralase IntraLASIK All Laser LASIK Detailed Information and Comparison"...

About IntraLase Corp

IntraLase designs, develops, and manufactures an ultra-fast laser that is revolutionizing refractive and corneal surgery by creating safe and more precise corneal incisions. Delivering on the promise of ophthalmic laser technology, the IntraLase FS laser, related software, and disposable devices replace the hand-held microkeratome blade used during LASIK surgery. The unsurpassed accuracy of IntraLase's computer-controlled femtosecond laser has been shown to improve safety profiles and visual outcomes when used during LASIK. Additionally, the IntraLase FS laser creates precision-designed intracorneal incisions that when combined can be used during lamellar and penetrating keratoplasties and intrastromal ring implantation.

IntraLase is presently in the process of commercializing applications of its technology in the treatment of corneal diseases that require corneal transplant surgery. The company's proprietary laser and disposable patient interfaces are presently marketed throughout the United States and 26 other countries.

IntraLase is headquartered and manufactures its products in Irvine, California. Keratomileusis - The Carving Of The Cornea

At present, LASIK or “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis” is the only commonly performed keratomileusis procedure. Keratomileusis involves an altering of the shape of the corneal tissue with the aid of an excimer laser, which is a powerful ultraviolet laser. This laser eye surgery is performed by ophthalmologists in order to correct different types of vision impairment. LASIK is the preferred treatment for patients with refractive error, since the procedure entails rapid recovery and minimal pain overall.

LASIK surgery leverages technology to its fullest. For instance, a computer system tracks the patient’s eye position 4,000 times per second, while the lasers make the desired incisions. It might sound like a dangerous procedure, but it’s time to debunk this myth. LASIK surgery is a completely safe procedure performed with high precision. That is, the laser carves the corneal tissue in a finely controlled manner. LASIK surgery is not that cumbersome when compared with other types of eye surgery, and has a relatively low frequency of complications.

Though LASIK surgery is performed with the patient awake and functional, the eye surgeon typically administers a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops.

Read more on "How Does LASIK Eye Surgery Work? Now there is yet another exciting new alternative for people who are very nearsighted.

In February, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury of the Christenbury Eye Center will be the first in the Carolinas to introduce the Visian ICL®, a unique implantable collamer intraocular lens that corrects nearsightedness, a condition affecting 1 in 4 people in the U.S.

Think of the Visian ICL as a contact lens inside the eye, but better, because it is permanent and will never dry out, become dirty, get lost or need to be re-inserted in the eye each morning. This type of intra-ocular lens is a Phakic IOL.

“We are pleased to offer patients one more advanced technology that will make a difference in their eyesight and their quality of life,” says Dr. Christenbury, who is known for his pioneering work in new vision care treatments, including WaveFront Custom IntraLASIK and the ReSTOR procedure that eliminates the need for reading glasses or bifocals.

The Visian ICL is designed to correct moderate to severe nearsightedness and offers people who were not good candidates for laser vision correction the freedom from having to wear glasses and contact lenses. The Visian is also ideal for patients who might be LASIK candidates but prefer a reversible procedure.

Read more on "
Dr. Jonathan Christenbury First in Carolinas to Offer New Visian ICL for Nearsightedness"...

HealthFirst-GVSS Eye Reshaper - Lasik Alternative?

You've heard of retainers for your teeth. Now you can get them for your eyes. HealthFirst reporter Leslie LoBue says these contact lenses are an option to Lasik surgery for vision correction.
Depending on the child, some kids as young as ten have used the Gentle Vision Shaping system or GVSS, but that is really just a small part of the WOW factor here.

Fifteen year old April Townsend started using the GVSS vision retainers six months ago- with immediate results. "When I came in the first day and I took them out, I could see everything and it was really amazing because it felt like my eye, only I saw like I did with my glasses."

The retainers, which look like contact lenses, reshape the cornea while they are worn overnight. (dr. Matthew Martin/Optometrist, Auburn Optical)

"I love the concept of, I put something on, a vision retainer on at night, I go to bed, I don't do anything, I wake up in the morning, I take it out and I can see," said Dr. Matthew Martin, an optometrist with Auburn Optical.

High Court Lets Wabash Man Sue 3 Years After Lasik Eye Surgery

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Supreme Court ruled Friday that a northeast Indiana man can move forward with a medical malpractice lawsuit alleging Lasik eye surgery left him nearly blind in one eye.

In 2001, L. Thomas Booth sued Dr. Robert G. Wiley, Dr. Ronald Norlund and Midwest Eye Consultants in Wabash, but an Allen Superior Court trial judge found the man had not filed within the statute of limitations and dismissed the case.

The crux of the legal argument is when Booth should have known enough to suspect that a Lasik eye surgery first performed in November 1998 might have contributed to severe impairment in his right eye.

Wiley performed the laser surgery on Booth at that time and again in February 1999 based on a referral from Norlund. According to court records, Norlund suggested the surgery despite Booth’s history of glaucoma and cataracts.

After the Lasik surgery, Booth underwent several other eye operations in relation to his cataracts.

Under law, Booth had two years from the date of the original surgery or until November 2000 to claim malpractice.

But Booth’s attorneys argued he didn’t understand there was a connection between his worsening eyesight and the Lasik surgeries until after that period lapsed.

It wasn’t until December 2000 that another doctor told Booth that Lasik surgery should not have been performed because of his pre-existing conditions and might have complicated his cataracts. After this assessment, Booth sued in July 2001.

The Indiana Supreme Court – in a split 3-2 decision – found the evidence does not... This has genereally been a safe technique. However, the microkeratome produces a meniscus-shaped flap of variable overall thickness and always thinner in the center than at the edges. Occasionally a corneal abrasion or an irregular, incomplete, or button-hole flap results.

The IntraLase™ femtosecond laser virtually eliminates the risk traditionally involved in creating a LASIK eye flap. The LASIK surgeon programs the desired thickness, diameter, and hinge placement. Then, without using a blade, the IntraLase™ laser creates a predictable uniform-thickness flap. IntraLASIK is an all-laser LASIK vision treatment that minimizes the possibility of flap complications while maximizing comfort and safety.

IntraLASIK Laser Eye Surgery

IntraLasik Laser Eye Surgery in Texas - Links to lasik Houston, Dallas, Austin & San Antonio suregeon's websites

Using the new IntraLase-FS laser to create the corneal flap, we are now performing LASIK surgery without a blade.
