Laser Surgery For Vision Correction
Laser surgery for vision correction has progressed from evoking fear and scepticism to amazing patients with its precision, says L Subramani
When Dr Mani Bhaumik and his team first disclosed to the world that laser can correct myopia, the ophthalmic fraternity greeted the news with scepticism. Almost none could believe that a sharp laser beam cutting through the thin mussel on the cornea could correct refractive errors of the eye so simply.
"The funniest thing is despite Einstein proving its possibility in 1917, we couldn't develop the technology because no one was prepared to believe in it," says Dr Bhaumik, whose pioneering invention of the laser technology paved way for the LASIC form of eye-correction.
"From the early 1990s though, around 15 million people in the world have undergone LASIC or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis with almost complete functioning of their eyes."
