WaveLight's Wavefront-Optimized and Wavefront-Guided LASIK
93 Percent of Both Patient Cohorts Achieve 20/20 Vision and Neither Treatment Shown to Induce Higher-Order Aberrations
At a clinical course conducted this morning at the AmericanSociety of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual meeting inSan Francisco, Guy M. Kezirian, M.D., F.A.C.S and Karl G. Stonecipher,MD, presented six-month study results comparing outcomes ofwavefront-optimized and wavefront-guided treatments with theALLEGRETTO WAVE excimer laser. The study validated that both groupsperformed similarly for uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), manifestrefractive spheroequivalent (MRSE) and postoperative UCVA versuspreoperative best spectacle visual acuity (BSCVA).
The prospective controlled multi-center study was initiated inSeptember 2004 to evaluate the safety and effectiveness ofwavefront-guided treatments (incorporating the ALLEGRO wavefrontanalyzer) and to compare results to wavefront-optimized (standardLASIK) with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE. Myopic patients (up to +7D with up to+3D of astigmatism) were eligible to participate in the study. Basedon alternating enrollment, patients were randomized for eitherwavefront-optimized or wavefront-guided treatments in both eyes.
